Very soon, the US may be alone in their fight to keep online gambling prohibition alive. This week, yet another country took a step towards freedom for their residents when Sri Lanka legalized gambling, and perhaps moved closer to Internet gambling regulations.

The Sri Lanka government took a practical approach to gambling when they claimed that they simply legalized something that already was occurring in the country. Gambling and betting on horses are both now legal in Sri Lanka, and the opposition has come out with a hard-lined stance against the new law.

"The government is trying to legalize an illegal activity," said United National Party member Joseph Michael Perera.

The government asserted that gambling is already rampant in Sri Lanka, and that now there will be safeguards for their citizens. Gambling halls will be unable to remain operational after next year without a gaming license. This will ensure that some of the behavior, such as prostitution, that is currently taking place, will have consequences.

The opposition has argued that prostitution exists currently at these unregulated casinos, and that the government has now legalized prostitution. For those within the government that understood the dangers of the current gambling industry, they look at the new laws as a way to combat the illegal activity.

One of the other important aspects of the legislation that was passed is where the casinos can be built. There are specific zones in which a business owner will be able to build a land or online casino. That will ensure that the casinos will not be placed in areas where they could be a drain on a community.
