New Jersey Gambling Summit
Democratic lawmakers in New Jersey held the second of three planned gaming summits in the state in a bid to discuss the future of casinos and horse racing. The second summit, held at the Meadowlands complex, attracted over 600 people, many of them construction and labor workers who have been affected by the lack of activity in New Jersey in recent years. In March of this year, Governor Christie made recommendations for the state to take over Atlantic City to save the casinos in the location and clean up the city's image. The three gaming summits were planned in response to the recommendations made by the governor's Commission on Gaming, Sports and Entertainment.
The Meadowland summit aimed to push for the saving of the historic racetrack, with East Rutherford Mayor James Casella expressing his concern over the decline of the horse racing industry in the state.
"I would hate to see this place go back to what it was, which was a barren wasteland," said Casella. "This really is the economic engine, not only of North Jersey, but all of New Jersey."
Regional competition, especially from Pennsylvania, has wreaked havoc with New Jersey's income from gambling in the past four years, with many casinos forced to lay off thousands of employees as a result.
